We’re pleased to announce a cohort of pre-selected artists for participation in the 2026-27 MexiCali Biennial, PARA/normal Borders. These artists’ practices are exemplary in their ability to create multi-media works that compel viewers to engage in supernatural topics including reflective spiritual identities, spectral histories, SciFi Futurism, and cosmic observations. An Open Call will be released in early 2026 for artists to propose works in conversation with the concept of borders – both real and metaphorical – as supernatural spaces. PARA/normal Borders is curated by Ed Gomez, Luis G. Hernandez, and María Esther Fernández. Beginning in Fall 2026 in the borderlands at several partnering institutions, the program will include multimedia exhibitions, border activations and performances before shifting to The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Arts and Culture of the Riverside Art Museum in February 2027. Happening now is a series of experimental exhibitions and programs at the MXCL BNL LAB in Whittier that will inform and shape these programs.
Invited artists include:
Edgar Fabian Frias (LA), Guillermo Estrada/Rancho Shampoo (Tecate + SD), Ruben Ortiz Torres (SD + LA), Chantal Peñalosa Fong (Tecate + NY), Veronica Preciado (Riverside), Talia Perez Gilbert (TJ), Andrew Roberts (TJ), Elisa Pinto (MX), Omar Guerra (GDL), Omar Khalid (TJ), Adrián Pereda Vidal (Mexicali)
