This pop-up dinner event invites you to immerse yourself in the charming and delicious world of beloved grandmother Obaachan’s kitchen. \nThe dinner is inspired by artist/architect/restaurateur Minoru Kiyota’s grandmother’s recipes and her New Year’s celebration. The event aims to remember her memory\, and experiences with her through food. The recipes are a testament to the harmonious blend between Japanese heritage and personal creativity\, creating dishes that are truly unique and steeped in history. The meal includes seven courses and drinks for $700 MXN. Direct message the host HERE to reserve your spot. Space is limited! \nPlanta Libre is a space for artistic and cultural projects located in the historic center of Mexicali whose objective is to strengthen\, disseminate and encourage the artistic production of the Baja California community\, operating as a platform that invites dialogue\, the development of links and collaborations by through the diversity of disciplines and topics that it presents. The experimental art space is located above Haiku comida+cultura japonesa\, an establishment that honors the owners’ Japanese ancestry\, in particular the matriarch’s (Obaachan) migration to Mexicali.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we wrap up Land of Milk & Honey\nin Mexicali and Calexico.  \nLand of Milk & Honey celebrates the cultural significance of agriculture and foodways in the shared regions of California and Mexico. Iterations of this program have occurred at SEVEN arts and culture venues and included over SIXTY artists and collaborators. Closing events will take place on December 1 & 2\, 2023 and include a pop-up dinner event\, a curator Meet and Greet\, and an exploration into Japanese diaspora with artist Shinpei Takeda. The events will end with a celebratory toast and cake. See below for events info. \nnoon – 2:00 p.m.\nCurator/Artist Meet and Greet\nSteppling Art Gallery\, San Diego State University Imperial Valley Campus\n720 Heber Ave Calexico\, CA 92231 \nPlease join the Land of Milk & Honey curatorial team at the Steppling Art Gallery (Calexico). Curators will be available to answer questions and discuss projects pertaining to the exhibition. This casual event is free and open to the public. \n\n5:00 p.m.\nArtist Discussion – Virtual Space for Collective Memory\ncasa la linea – arte contemporaneo\n947 E 1st St\, Calexico\, CA 92231 \nAs a part of Shinpei Takeda’s “Float for Reclamation (Limit of your Safe Space II)” the artist and participating collaborators will meeting in a Virtual Space they made together to discuss their project exploring collective memory of Japanese Diaspora on the both sides of the border. It will be real-time broadcasted onsite and will be broadcast virtually.  casa la linea – arte contemporaneo is an independent art space located directly adjacent to the border fence. \n\n6:00 p.m.\nClosing Celebration\nWe invite you to stay at casa la linea – arte contemporaneo after the artist discussion for a celebratory toast. MexiCali Biennial project manager\, researcher and Land of Milk & Honey co-curator April Lillard-Gomez will be serving cake to celebrate a successful run. Lillard-Gomez is a classically trained chef who conceived of Land of Milk & Honey as a way to honor the memory of loved ones from her home state of Oklahoma\, the Dust Bowl refugees that migrated to the region\, and the numerous peoples who have left a cultural blueprint in the area. As a mother of a recently diagnosed child with celiac disease\, she is now a dedicated gluten free baker – continuing the cultural\, social and biological impacts of foodways within her research.
